Firefighters have taken control of a large grass fire burning near Conroe.

At the height of the fire, it covered about 30 acres near the North Loop 336 West at West Davis. No homes were threatened and no evacuations were required, we're told.

However, Conroe firefighters are staying at the scene for several hours to watch for hot spots or any changes in the blaze.

Conroe Fire Chief Ken Kreger issued a statement which read in part, "With the strong winds in the area, they will be continually monitoring the situation. Chief Kreger requests that if able, people simply avoid driving in the area to avoid unnecessary traffic."

The Texas Forest Service is sending a bulldozer to help contain the fire.

No injuries were immediately reported.
