Tax deadline quickly approaching

HOUSTON That's the word from the Harris County Tax Office. Officials say delinquent business personal property tax accounts will be turned over to attorneys for collection on April 2 and a 15 to 20 percent penalty will be added to any unpaid balance.

"The week of Feb. 28, we sent about 45,000 notices to persons with delinquent business personal property accounts," Tax Assessor-Collector Don Sumners said. "We warned them that state law now allows this early turnover of accounts like theirs. This year, 64 of the 66 jurisdictions for which the tax office collects chose the early collection date. The 15-20 percent penalty is a major extra cost. I hope those who owe pay on or before Friday, April 1."

Payments can be made at the 15 tax office branch offices, made online at www.hctax.net or by telephone at 713-368-CARD (2273).

Business owners also can avoid the additional collection penalty if they make an installment agreement with the tax office by April 1. Anyone with questions about their accounts or who want to arrange an installment agreement is advised to call the tax office at 713-368-2000.
