Astrodome fire forces horse show cancellation

HOUSTON SkyEye HD was over the Astrodome around 11:30am Friday. Firefighters say there was a fire that broke out in an electrical vault at the east end of the dome. They were able to contain it, and there weren't any injuries.

The fire did give off a lot of smoke though. Some was visible coming from a side entrance. Crews worked to get the smoke out of the building.

Reliant Park officials initially told HFD that this fire will not interrupt any of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo preparation activities going on at the grounds. But it was later learned a lack of electricity at Reliant Arena caused officials to cancel the Top Hands Horse Show events for the remainder of the weekend.

The Top Hands Horse Show offers physically challenged riders of all ages the opportunity to compete in a variety of six events, including showmanship at halter, English equitation, Western equitation, trail, pole bending and barrel racing. The show is divided into divisions based on assistance needed.
