Deputy involved in fatal West Texas car crash

ODESSA, TX Ector County Sheriff's Office spokesman Sgt. Gary Duesler says 34-year-old Deputy David Escudero was driving an unmarked car with lights and siren to assist in a pursuit late Saturday night.

The Texas Department of Public Safety reports that Escudero's car crashed into a vehicle driven by Anthony Neel that failed to yield at a stop sign.

The Odessa American reports that the impact caused Neel's vehicle began to roll. He was thrown from it and died at the scene.

Duesler says Neel was not involved in the pursuit.

Neel's passenger, 43-year-old Brenda Madrid, was in serious condition with head injuries. Escudero, who suffered broken ribs and a leg injury, was also hospitalized in serious condition.
