The San Antonio Express-News reports Sunday that Ramirez was visiting a woman in her apartment Thursday morning when another man kicked in the door and began arguing with her.
Police say the angry man was 33-year-old Gabriel Reyes Castillo or just Gabriel Reyes.
Ramirez intervened to protect the woman and punched the man in the face.
Police say the man left only to return with a shovel that he beat Ramirez in the head with.
Ramirez' lifeless body was found sprawled on the sidewalk in front of the apartment.
Police have issued a murder warrant for Castillo.
