SUGAR LAND, TX --Sugar Land is closer to choosing a name for its new minor league baseball team. The city says it's received nearly 5,000 entries since it launched the name contest last month. Some of the suggestions pay tribute to the city's sugar refining history with names like the Canes, Imperials, and Sugar Bears. Some animal suggestions for the team are the Jackrabbits, Prairie Dogs, and Gators. Later this month, the finalists will be narrowed to five to seven names and then fans have two weeks to vote. The winning team name will be announced next month. The team starts playing in spring of 2012. The city hasn't yet decided on a location for the baseball stadium. The top choice is a piece of land near Highway 6 and US 90 near the Sugar Land Regional Airport. Another location off Highway 59 near University Boulevard is also being considered. A final decision on the site could come soon.
