Court will consider mother's insanity defense

A state district court hearing in San Antonio will determine whether a mother accused of decapitating her three-week-old baby can plead not guilty by reason of insanity. A spokesman for Bexar County District Attorney Susan Reed says the Thursday hearing will decide whether Otty Sanchez can enter the insanity plea.

The 33-year-old San Antonio woman is charged with capital murder in the death of her son, Scott Wesley Buchholz-Sanchez.

A judge ruled in November that a jury would decide whether Sanchez was mentally competent to stand trial. If Sanchez is allowed to plead not guilty, she will be sent to a state mental institution.
