Officials say a school teacher in East Texas was shot through the front door of her home on the last day of school. The Texarkana Gazette was reporting Friday that the shooting occurred around 3:30 a.m. when the teacher answered a knock at her front door in De Kalb, about 150 miles northeast of Dallas.

The newspaper, citing officials, reports the teacher was in surgery this morning. The Malta Independent School District confirmed to the Gazette that the woman is a teacher there.

The suspect remains at large. Police, the sheriff's office and the Department of Public Safety are assisting in the search.

Officials with the school district, De Kalb police and the Bowie County Sheriff's Department declined to comment to The Associated Press.
