Girl, 8, killed in wreck in NE Harris Co.

HOUSTON According to Harris County deputies, shortly after 4am, the driver of a pickup truck was traveling on the wrong side of the road westbound in the 800 block of Aldine Mail near Henry. The driver of a sedan carrying four young girls heading in the opposite direction noticed the pickup and tried to get out of the way, but was unsuccessful. The right front of the pickup struck the right front of the sedan.

An 8-year-old girl in the sedan, identified as Evelyn Moreno, died in the accident. The other three girls, as well as the driver of the sedan, were transported to Memorial Hermann for treatment. Their conditions are unknown at this time.

The driver of the pickup was injured and transported to a hospital for treatment. That Harris County Sheriff's Office says intoxication manslaughter charges have been filed against that driver, who has been identified as Anthony LeBlanc, 39.

"One lane each direction, pretty deep ditches on either side of the roadway, so probably the best way to avoid a collision was to swerve into the oncoming traffic like the driver of the Taurus did," said Sgt. S. Wolverton with the Harris County Sheriff's Office. "Unfortunately, she was unable to avoid the crash."

Investigators say the LeBlanc has a prior weapons charge. He's expected in court later this week on manslaughter charges related to this accident.

We're told the four children and driver of the sedan had just left an overnight church function.
