Hospital district lays off 17 employees

The Harris County Hospital District blames the increasing cost of helping uninsured residents for its decision to lay off more than a dozen employees. The district eliminated 17 administrative positions, but no more are expected. A decrease in reimbursement for services, and increases in costs for uncompensated care to a growing number of uninsured people made the layoffs necessary.

HCHD President and CEO David Lopez said, "We are aggressively pursuing other cost-saving measures to reduce the impact. Patient care and safety remain our top concerns."
