Overturned truck shuts down 59 ramp

November 25, 2009 10:34:07 AM PST
An overturned big rig just off the North Loop and Highway 59 may cause some delays for travelers heading to Bush Intercontinental Airport today. The accident happened just before 6am on the North Loop westbound ramp to the Eastex northbound lanes. All lanes of the ramp are closed off to traffic and HazMat crews will take a while to clean up oil and fuel spill.

Investigators say the driver may have tried to take the ramp too fast, causing the rig to overturn.

"The sludge oil is used to clean up the bottom of tanks and it does possibly contain some sort of Benzene," said Officer T.L. Roberson with the Houston Police Department.

Environmental crews are at the scene as well.

Meanwhile, commuters can go to Irvington, U-turn and come back or instead, can take the Hirsch exit to Kelly to continue on the Loop.

Houston police says the big rig driver was not injured in the wreck.
