More than 1,300 realize dream of citizenship

HOUSTON More than 1,360 people took the oath of citizenship in north Houston Wednesday morning. The immigrants came to America looking for the freedoms we have in this country.

Former U.S. Marine Carlos Briones tried to express his feelings, "Happiness. I mean freedom. This country's given so much, it's giving more. I'm so happy, I can't describe it anymore."

"It was hard to start as a new immigrant," said Zakir Hossain. "But we are very happy to be American. We are really happy. We are proud now."

After the ceremony, 1,022 of the new immigrants registered to vote.
