Houstonians take steps for healthier hearts

November 8, 2009 5:17:03 AM PST
An estimated 15,000 Houstonians spent Saturday morning walking for a healthy lifestyle, and a healthy heart. It was all a part of the American Heart Association's annual Start Houston Heart Walk. Attendees gathered at the Sam Houston Park in downtown Houston to participate in the five-mile walk. The event also featured plenty of dancing, treats and activities for kids. Those participating in the walk say heart health simply begins with prevention.

"We are the power. We are the cure. It is about prevention. It is about education and awareness," said attendee Laurence Payne. "And really, the more we know, the better we're prepared, not only for ourselves, but for our loved ones, to be there long-term for them."

The AHA touts walking as one of the easiest ways people can achieve a healthy lifestyle.
