St. Anthony statue beheaded

SAN ANTONIO, TX A spokesman for the San Antonio Roman Catholic archdiocese says witnesses reported seeing a man shouting obscenities just before 6 a.m. Sunday in the city's Main Plaza, near San Fernando Cathedral.

Deacon Pat Rodgers tells the San Antonio Express-News that the man grew agitated as he ran through the courtyard and past the statue. Rodgers says the man stopped and hurled a rock at the statue's head, knocking off the head.

Rodgers says the head survived the fall from the 15-foot statue intact. The statue is now shrouded in a black plastic bag until repairs can be made.
