The Department of Justice will give the Houston Police Department money to address a backlog of DNA tests. HPD will receive a $1.3 million grant to make improvements to its DNA crime lab. The police department says the money will help reduce turnaround times to 30 days for DNA tests.

HPD says it will also help decrease the testing backlog of more than 1,000 cases to a target of 100 cases.
