Dead humpback whale found floating in river

September 28, 2009 12:45:40 PM PDT
Biologists are trying to figure out what killed a humpback whale found floating in a Virginia river. David Malmquist of the Virginia Institute of Marine Science says the 25-foot whale was first sighted Saturday.

Humpbacks are found in oceans and seas around the world but Malmquist says the whale's appearance in the York River near coastal Gloucester Point is uncommon.

According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, humpbacks have been listed as endangered since 1970.
