IRS says beware of e-mail scams

DALLAS, TX An IRS statement Monday says fraudsters pose as an official trying to trick a victim into revealing personal and financial information.

People who respond to the scam could become victims of identity theft or financial loss.

One scam references the Making Work Pay provision of the 2009 economic recovery law when a consumer receives an unsolicited e-mail that appears to come from the IRS and says the consumer is eligible for a tax refund.

Internal Revenue Service spokesman Clay Sanford says the agency does not contact or discuss tax account matters with taxpayers by e-mail.
