EBay working on alternative software for Skype

July 31, 2009 12:53:46 PM PDT
EBay Inc. is developing software it might use to continue running the online telecommunications service Skype if it cannot resolve a legal dispute with a separate company run by the service's founders. EBay says it has started developing software that would work as an alternative to the technology it currently licenses from Joltid.

The company notes that its efforts might not be successful, however, and could lead to a "loss of functionality or customers even if successful."

Regardless, the company says, building such software will be costly.

EBay disclosed the Skype alternative in a regulatory filing this week.

EBay declined further comment.
