Pancho Claus celebrates Christmas in July

July 31, 2009 5:43:08 AM PDT
Local folk hero Pancho Claus helped east side children celebrate Christmas in July. Pancho Claus and Taxis Fiesta handed out toys, other gifts and candy to children across east Houston. Pancho Claus does the same thing each Christmas but in recent years wanted to surprise kids in the summer time.

"It's a whole new ball game," he explained. "They have what we didn't have. They have AIDS, they have gangs, they have terrorism, they have 9/11. They don't have Astroworld any more, they don't have a free zoo anymore. So what's a kid to do in the summer? So we just said, 'Christmas in July' because our kids deserve two Christmases."

Taxis Fiesta paid for the gifts and their drivers volunteered their time to take part in the event.
