Ike-flooded homes demolished near Beaumont

Demolition has begun on more than 100 houses in west Jefferson County damaged by 2008's Hurricane Ike. KFDM-TV reports a majority of families in the Labelle community are taking part in the government buyout.

The Sept. 13 hurricane flooded an area known as Country Road Estates, west of Beaumont, where 114 homes are being torn down.

A review after Ike revealed an error in decades-ago survey information and that some houses were constructed too low, on the flood plain, hindering them from receiving permits to rebuild.

Demolition started this week.
