After months of informal talks, Rice University and Baylor College of Medicine officials will say they agreed to formally discuss the possibility of a merger. The terms of the agreement are confidential.

Rice and Baylor officials were a little more forthcoming with staff and faculty. In a letter sent out Thursday afternoon, the presidents for both institutions said in part, "While no decision on a merger has yet been made and many issues remain to be resolved, our boards have concluded that a closer affiliation has abundant potential benefits for both institutions, as well as for our home city of Houston."

If it happens, exactly what a merger would look like, a timetable or possible names are questions that likely will not be answered for months. What does seem clear is, if approved, Rice would acquire a world renowned medical school and Baylor would get the backing of a major university.
