Fire Dept. Battalion Chief Patrick Murphy says the 19-month-old girl was lucky to be alive.
The mother told authorities she was doing laundry when the toddler was near an open window and leaned against the screen, which gave way. The child landed on some grass.
The girl was transported by ambulance to Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth.
A hospital official, who asked to be identified as "Colbert," told KFDM-TV that the girl was doing "very good" and would spend Thursday night at the hospital, for observation purposes.
