Villagers said the man had once been hospitalized for mental illness, and he seemed unstable while being interrogated by police. Those killed included two men in their 60s, a husband and wife in their 50s along with the mother of one of them, and a 7-year-old boy. Xinhua reports the boy's mother was injured when she tried to stop the attacker.
When contacted by telephone, local police declined to answer questions about the incident and referred a reporter to the state media reports.
