HISD's plan to split Sam Houston High School into two schools has been approved by the state. Six years of poor academic performance prompted the state to shut the school down. HISD's new plan for Sam Houston includes a ninth grade academy with college and career programs.

It also calls for a campus for 10th through 12th grades, which would feature a center for math, science and technology.
