HPD feeling pinch at gas pump

HOUSTON The rising cost of fuel has officers making some changes to their routine. Houston police don't pay quite as much as everyone else, but even at half the cost, the price hikes are still tough to deal with.

That's causing concerns about their budget, especially with fuel costs expected to reach more than $11 million for the next fiscal year.

"If you are used to paying a dollar for a gas, if it goes up to two, you can feel the pinch," said Captain Williams with the Houston Police Department.

"The types of things we are doing to respond to that, for example, we've been moving to hybrids for some period of time," said Mayor Bill White.

HPD officials want to make sure that you know that no matter what the cost of fuel is, they won't do anything to compromise the safety of citizens.
