Child found dead in SE Houston

HOUSTON Family members in shock embraced each other after hearing the news. The mother of a 3-year-old girl called 911 around 4pm when the toddler was found with severe injuries in a white one-bedroom home near Blackhawk and Fuqua. She was pronounced dead at Memorial Hermann Hospital.

"It appears it was physical trauma," said Ryan Chandler with the Houston Police Department. "As to whether it was intentional or accidental, we're not sure at this time."

Police handcuffed a man on the property who they told us Monday night is the child's father. He was taken in for questioning as police sort out what happened. Camilo Garza III was later charged with capital murder.

Investigators say old wounds were found on the child's body.

"It does appear that the child does have prior injuries, but again, we're not sure if it's accidental or intentional," said Chandler.

CPS has taken a 6-year-old and a 10-month-old also living in the home into custody. The family's landlord says the man police took into custody Monday recently ranted about the toddler's behavior.

"I said, 'You got to love them in spite of what they do'," said landlord Paul Paulson.

An autopsy will be performed on the child Tuesday morning.
