UH track star named C-USA athlete of year

IRVING, TX The award, which is Diggs' first, was voted on by the league's coaches and is given out annually to a male and female during the indoor track and field season.

Diggs won the award after finishing first in the high jump competition at the C-USA Indoor Track and Field Championships clearing 2.16m (7 feet, 1 inch). He was also named an NCAA Indoor All-American after a fourth-place finish of 2.19m (7 feet, 2 1/4 inches) at the NCAA Indoor Championships.

He was named the C-USA Male Athlete of the Week for the week of Jan. 15 after notching a personal best clearance of 2.22m (7 feet, 3 1/4 inches). The mark was the best in C-USA and ranks as the fourth best jump on school history.

Diggs is the fourth Cougar to win the annual award. Stanford Routt was the last Cougar to take home the award in 2004. Other Cougars to do so include Dennis Darling (1998, 1999) and Darius Pemberton (1997).

Tulane's Gloria Asumnu was named the Female Athlete of the Year while Blessing Okagbare of UTEP and John Beattie of Tulsa were named the Newcomers of the Year.
