Three killed in garbage truck wreck

LEAGUE CITY, TX State troopers spent hours at the scene retracing the accident. Although the investigation remains open, troopers believe speed likely caused the wreck that shattered lives in an instant.

Just a shell of a truck left behind from an accident that killed the three men who were inside.

"The vehicle was northbound on the feeder road at this time we assume the failure to control speed, over corrected and hit the concrete side wall," said Trooper Todd Phillips of the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The Allied Waste employee plowed the cab of the garbage truck into an underpass concrete pillar. He and two passengers were killed instantly. One of the workers, Terrance Owens, was Gloria Cook's 40-year-old son.

"He was a good hearted person, he loved sports, he played basketball for La Marque High School," she told us.

Cook watched in disbelief as fire fighter's cut her son's body out of the truck.

"It's an incredible loss for our company, Allied always puts safety first and has ever since I have known them," said Jeff Diamant who is the attorney for Allied Waste. "It's an extremely unfortunate incident and I can promise you that Allied's hearts, thoughts and prayers are going out to the family members of the deceased."

The accident happened a few hours later after rush hour. As the driver, Owens and another employee travelled to the land fill. The rear end loader was completely full. When the truck flipped, a mountain of trash poured into the street. It took hours to clean up the mess after a complicated operation to recover the bodies.

"It took a while they were pinned in to the cement pillar so we had to have tow trucks pull them back and then the fire department had to cut them out," said Trooper Phillips. The identities of the other two men have not been released. No other vehicles were involved in the wreck.
