HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Backup quarterback Case Keenum has been released by the Texans, sources tell ABC-13 sports, but there will still be three quarterbacks on the roster.

The NFL Network's Ian Rapoport cited a source on Twitter confirming that New England Patriots backup quaterback Ryan Mallett has been traded to the Texans.

O'Brien was the quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator with the Patriots when the team drafted Mallett in the third round in 2011, Yahoo Sports reports.

The Texans traded a 2016 conditional 7th round pick for Mallett, the source said Rapoport. The Texans then released Keenum, the team's No. 2 quarterback, after acquiring Mallett, ABC-13 Sports confirmed.
