HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A local zydeco singer is in the hospital after police say he was attacked and shot in the driveway of his north Houston home. Officers say the man and his girlfriend were listening to music outside his home when they were attacked.
He calls himself the 'Texas prince of zydeco blues." Known as 'Jabo' in the music community, the 59-year-old is on life-support after being shot once during a carjacking.
"All of a sudden, I heard a 'bam' on my back door," said Wanda Towers, the victim's mother.
Towers lives down the street from the singer. She says her son came knocking on her door last night around 10 pm.
"Saying, 'Open the door. I've been shot' and I said, 'You've been shot?' And he said, 'Yes, ma'am. I've been shot. Call 911.'"
Houston police say Jabo wasn't alone.
"His girlfriend was with him," said Officer Ken Nealy with the Houston Police Department. "She witnessed the shooting. She was trying to get away from it. She managed to get away from the males as they were shooting her boyfriend."
We're told the girlfriend ran behind the home to get away. The suspects, who drove up in a black and red older model pickup truck, took Jabo's wallets, cell phones and their car.
Neighbors say this isn't the first time police have been to the home. Police confirm they've been out there six times since March.
