HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- A major winter storm is taking aim at parts of North Texas, and we are expecting it to bring us a cold rain for much of Thursday.
We started off with a light drizzle in parts of SE Texas this morning and more rain is on the way this afternoon and evening as an area of low pressure goes up the Texas coastline. Widespread rain is expected to continue into the overnight hours before tapering off Friday morning.
We saw some isolated light rain this morning and more rain is on the way for the afternoon and evening. It will be a chilly rain, too, with temps in Houston hovering in the upper 30s and low 40s. The rain will be off-and-on through the afternoon, but by the evening and through the night it should be raining almost non-stop. With low pressure tracking along the coast, heavy rain and street flooding are possible in our coastal counties. The rain should taper off during the Friday morning commute.
Most of us won't see any wintry precipitation, but we are guaranteed to have a cold rain settling in Thursday afternoon through Friday morning as temperatures hover in the mid-to-upper 30s. On Friday morning, there is a brief window for the rain to change over to snow from College Station to Huntsville to Trinity and Livingston. Why? Another surge of cold air will be arriving behind a cold front on Friday, but most of the moisture may be gone by the time those freezing temperatures roll back in. So at this time we do not expect any frozen accumulations in Southeast Texas, but we're watching things closely just in case the freezing temperatures and moisture do overlap north of Houston.
Saturday and Sunday will both bring cold mornings but milder afternoons under a mostly sunny sky. A light freeze is likely on Saturday morning, and Sunday morning could feature a coating of frost. High temperatures will climb into the 50s on Saturday and into the 60s on Sunday.
