HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- The summer heat is here, and the National Weather Service has extended the Heat Advisory for most of Southeast Texas until 8 p.m. Wednesday. A Heat Advisory is issued when the heat index is expected to top 108. Make sure you take frequent breaks and stay well-hydrated if working or engaging in intense physical activity for long stretches of time.
Temperatures overnight will have a tough time dropping below 80 degrees before sunrise, then the sunshine will warm temperatures back into the mid 90s. The high humidity will push the heat index to 108 or hotter across most of Southeast Texas. Even though a heat ridge is causing the air to sink overhead, there's still a 20% chance of a cooling afternoon summer shower. A disturbance riding around the edge of the heat ridge will rotate into Southeast Texas Wednesday night, and that will be good enough for a 30% chance of a late night thunderstorm.
For starters, the heat is going nowhere, and we may again find ourselves under a Heat Advisory. There will be enough moisture present for a 30% chance of a downpour on Saturday and a 20% chance of a shower on Sunday.
It looks like the heat ridge will get stronger the first few days of July, keeping it seasonally hot for the holiday. The humidity should be fairly high, too, which will be good enough for a 10% chance of a holiday rain shower or thunderstorm.
We are watching two features in the tropics. First, is a Saharan dust cloud that brings us a hazy gray sky by the weekend, and second is a tropical wave on the southern edge of that dust cloud that could develop once it gets into the western Caribbean and southwestern Gulf of Mexico.
