Veteran's family faces challenges
A veteran and his growing family are facing an uncertain future with hope

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Eyewitness News first introduced you to the McCoy family on Veteran's Day.

D'Andre was one of several homeless veterans who received a free haircut from Knatty Headz Natural Hair Studio.

We checked back in with D'Andre and his family to see how they're doing. While they have a roof over their head for now, it's not exactly a home.

While some families choose to sleep on sidewalks to be the first inside retail stores this time of year, other families do not have any other choice.

D'Andre and Candice McCoy have lived on the street before.

"At one point, we did have to sleep at a bus stop," D'Andre said, "We had to do what we had to do."

The McCoys are sleeping in a church office with their 18-month-old daughter Aubrey. Aubrey will be a big sister soon; Candice is pregnant with a baby boy.

"It's not where we want to be, but we know it's a lot better than where we could be," D'Andre said.

D'Andre is a military veteran. When he left the military a few years ago, he had trouble finding a job. He says he turned to theft out of desperation, something he's not proud of.

However, he says he has no intention of going down that path again.

"I just got my fork lifting license from another agency," D'Andre said, "So that, hopefully, will open up more doors."

Meanwhile, the McCoys are grateful for the open doors they already found at the small church where they're staying.

"Having each other is a big part," Candice said, "And that's really what I'm thankful for, is to have family."

The McCoys say they're excited about the new baby due mid-December, but they also know providing for him will be a challenge.

"We are worried but at the same time, we leave it in God's hands because we know that he is capable of doing all things," D'Andre said.

The McCoys have learned to value the small stuff.

"Sometimes we just need to hear something cheerful," Candice said.

MartinGray PR has volunteered to coordinate donations for the McCoy family. If you would like to help, contact them at 281-815-2101 The McCoys say they need food for the next two weeks and baby diapers.
