HOUSTON -- There's a major traffic alert for drivers in east Houston.
The inbound main lanes of the I-10 East Freeway at the 610 East Loop are closed as crews are making emergency repairs to the Union Pacific Railroad bridge over I-10 East between McCarty and Wayside. The closure is scheduled to last 24 hours.
The bridge was hit Monday afternoon, causing significant damage and shutting down all rail transportation into and out of the Port area along that rail line.
In addition to the I-10 East westbound lanes being closed, several direct connectors in the area will also close to eliminate westbound traffic on the I-10 main lanes during the repairs:
During the closure, westbound traffic will be detoured to the East Loop northbound, then to 59 southbound and back to I-10 East westbound. Police officers will be stationed at each connector to set up and maintain the closure.
