Doctors across the U.S. say watch out for a pesky bug that can make you allergic to red meat.
If eating fajitas, steaks and burgers are your thing, you might want to try and avoid the outdoors. The culprit is called the Lone Star tick. It's named for Texas where meaty BBQs are popular.
Researchers say when the bug bites you, it triggers an immune system response that makes you allergic to red meat. Experts say the bugs harbor some form of sugar that humans don't have. The same sugar is also found in red meat not chicken.
Patients report fevers, body aches, severe itching as part of their symptoms. Doctors say the onset usually occurs within four to six hours from the patient eating any sort of red meat.
So far, no reports of the Lone Star tick have surfaced in the Houston area. Doctors still warn people to call their physician if any sudden onset allergic reaction occurs after eating meat.
Right now, doctors are unsure if that reaction is permanent.
