ABC13 spoke to an expert to learn more about how department cuts might impact Houston-area students who rely on federal assistance.
The decision came Friday as HISD continues to make cuts, including more than 2,300 administrative jobs, after the Texas Education Agency took over the district earlier this year.
Superintendent Mike Miles said the audit will determine how many "excess teachers" HISD has, adding that will be implemented over time, as he says he's creating a "high-performance culture."
Numerous teachers spoke to ABC13 saying they have "lost thousands of dollars from what they believed they would be paid " after two offer letters depicting high and low salaries were sent to them.
The special education teacher said she was on her way to a New Education System school that the new superintendent touted for its appealing salaries, among other things. But she gives other educators this warning on ABC13.
One teacher told ABC13 when she joined in on a meeting that was announcing the cuts, she was shocked by the news and felt disrespected after realizing it was a prerecorded video.
