Just minutes before their 3-day holiday weekend was set to start, Fort Bend County library staff members said they were told the extended break was off.
Although Banned Books Week was established decades ago, it remains relevant today. The Texas Library Association is on the front lines of defending what they call intellectual freedom with "Freed Between the Lines."
When ABC13 asked for a list of schools without a librarian or a dedicated library, HISD said books are available to students, teachers are trained in their reading program, and its staffing model doesn't allow for librarians.
The change has a Friends of FBISD Libraries group member outraged. "This is a very bad omen for the district," Anna Lykoudis Zafiris explained. "These board members are not respecting professionals..."
Parents and staffers packed a board meeting Monday night, demanding answers over changing library policies and a move to omit science textbook chapters.
Staff would first ask for cards at the door, but now the League City library believes people are sufficiently aware of a new policy to combat capacity challenges.
