Teen's party ends in fatal shooting
A pregnant young woman was shot and killed as she slept in a back room during a SW Houston party

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- The search is on for the person who killed a pregnant woman at a birthday party in southwest Houston.

It happened at a home on Clarke Springs near Hiram Clarke Saturday night.

Police say a woman, identified as 24-year-old Dixie Mendez, was in the back bedroom and a bullet went through the window, hitting her in the head and killing her.

Police say the guests were all there to celebrate a teen's birthday party.

"During the party there was a female in the back not related to the shooting when someone was shooting from outside and she was hit," said Wendell Gilbert with the Houston Police Homicide Division.

Hours later a happy celebration had turn to tears.

"She was a great person, if anyone knows anything, please come forward," said Dixie's friend Britney Mathis.

Friends say Dixie had just learned she was pregnant.

Some neighbors have bullet damage and feel unsafe in their own homes.

"It's really gotten bad over here. You are kind of scared to come out at night," said neighbor Daphaney Davin.

And now her closest friends are hanging on to the last memories and her future that could have been.

"Her last words to me were, 'I love you, be careful, call when you get home.' I didn't get a chance to call when I got home," said the victim's friend Chassidy Sanders.

Police say they have no information on a suspect. Authorities say they do know there some type of fight outside of the home before shots rang out.
