Which stores offer best deals on back to school shopping?

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- When it comes to shopping for back to school supplies, everyone has their favorite store. But could it pay off to shop somewhere else?

We took the same list and shopped at Walgreens, Walmart, and Office Depot. Our list of supplies was for a third grader that included the essentials like crayons, pocket folders, glue, and scissors. There were also specialty items like manila paper and white construction paper included in the list.

Those specialty items were only available at the office supply store, and they proved to be the most expensive items on the list, coming in at $10.67 for those items.

The total at checkout at the office supply store came out to $32.81. Many items were on sale, but we scored the best deal on one subject notebooks for $0.40 each.

At Walgreens, we combined sales and coupons to score the best bargains and ended up saving 50 percent off our entire purchase. Combined with our specialty paper from Office Depot, our total was $24.17.

Our last stop was Walmart, which is known for their rock bottom prices. We found notebooks and crayons for $0.25, plastic pocket folders for $0.50. Our total there was the lowest at $22.95.

In the end, Walmart beat Walgreens by $1.22 and Walmart beat out Office Depot by $9.86.

Many parents we spoke to said the like the convenience of one stop shopping without playing the coupon game.

"They have a variety, a good selection, and good prices," said shopper Shiji Varkey.
