Mother Teresa's sainthood celebrated in Houston

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Declared a saint 19 years after her death, Saint Teresa's mission is very much alive today.

It was evident on Monday morning at Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in downtown Houston. Hundreds turned out for a mass and procession in honor of Mother Teresa.

Cardinal DiNardo led the mass. He spoke about Mother Teresa's generosity and how she helped those in need. It was a message others shared throughout the day.

"Saint Teresa had a message of giving up wealth," said Joe Maurski with the Knights of Columbus.

"It's very beautiful what she did because she was the face of God to the forgotten," said Angelina Quintanilla, who attended the mass.

Keeping her mission going is what Catholics are vowing to do.

"We get too tied up in material things, and we just need to do simple things," said Maurski.

And with that in mind, hundreds walked in a procession around Co-Cathedral of the Scared Heart. Some prayed others reflected on the walk around the church's grounds.

The procession was followed by a mass.

Hundreds attended the mass from across the city.
