Suspect in North Freeway road rage shooting makes first court appearance

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- The man accused of shooting a woman in an apparent case of road rage last month went before a judge overnight.

Deitrich Evans, 22, was arrested yesterday and charged with aggravated assault. He's accused in the shooting that wounded Kay Hafford on the North Freeway on March 20.

A task force took Evans down at his house on Aldine Bender. Sheriff's detectives say they discovered Evans' car, as well as the gun investigators say Evans used to shoot through Hafford's window after she honked her horn at him. A bullet grazed Hafford's head.

Hafford was hospitalized for a day after the shooting. Yesterday, we talked to her about Evans' arrest.

"It made me nervous. I just shed my few tears and I let it go. I knew without a shadow of a doubt, it was him. Seeing him made me hurt a little bit. It was almost like he was just uncomfortable, and I looked at him and could tell he was sorry. Not sorry he got caught, but he really did look like he was sorry," she said.

Evans' bond was set at $250,000.
