MASON, Texas (KTRK) -- Need a little getaway from the big city life? If so, you might want to consider heading out to Mason, just about four hours northwest of Houston.

The Red Sands Ranch is a nice place to relax with the family or somewhere to host a corporate event.

Just about anyone can appreciate the spectacular views of the hill country from the private ranch resort located on the Llano River.

Ranch owner John Gilbert retired in 2001 from his software company in Austin, and not long after, purchased the land in Mason.

"It started as dry land. Then we built cabins, a tennis court and it just went from there," Gilbert said.

There are six cabins: The Fish Camp, Lorenz House, Riverside Cottage, Sunday House, Sunday Loft and the Bunkhouse. It sleeps up to 35 people, perfect for a family reunion.

The kiddos and adults can enjoy the four-story enclosed waterslide, a full basketball court, tennis court, game room and hot tub.

If you're looking to let loose with friends, the ranch has amenities that will go perfect for the party. It includes a party shed with an LED TV and a pool and ping pong table.

A walk down the path will lead you to the river where you can set up your lounge chairs and have fun tubing down the rapids.

You also have a chance to see some wildlife throughout the day and into the night with sightings of deer, turkey, foxes, coyotes, bobcats, roadrunners and eagles.

Gilbert said his family tries to stay out at the ranch on weekends in the spring, summer and during the holidays, but the property is booked for most of the year with other guests.

And when ABC13 asked if he's thought about selling Red Sands Ranch, Gilbert said he built it with the expectation that it would always stay in the family.

"It would have to be a crazy good offer," Gilbert said.

Homeaway lists the property for rent at $1,650 a night with a minimum two to five night stay.
