Project Kindness pairs up older and younger generations

HOUSTON, Texas -- In celebration of World Kindness Day, we are highlighting those making a positive impact in our community.

A project run by the non-profit Compassionate Houston is teaming up senior citizens with freshmen from Houston Community College. It's called Project Kindness, and it brings different generations together to connect in a meaningful way.

David Strong has worked with young people as part of Project Kindness for several years. They meet at least once a week for 15 weeks.

"I really like getting to meet and to understand and to relate to younger people. I consider Bryant a friend," said Strong. "One of the things that it yields to me is that they're curious as well. Very curious about life."

"We talk about the kindness that we have seen, experienced and observed," said HCC student Bryant Castro, who is partnered with Strong this year.

Strong and Castro have done everything together from woodworking projects to taking a nature walk through Buffalo Bayou Park. Strong says he was surprised when Castro noticed a copy of The Divine Comedy on his bookshelf and wanted to read it.

"I've been seeking that book for years," said Castro, who was happy to borrow it.

"To have a young person go up there and see it and take interest in that particular book, which is hundreds of years old, I was blown away," said Strong.
