Shelter-in-place lifted after recycling plant fire in Dayton

DAYTON, Texas (KTRK) -- A shelter-in-place order has been lifted in Dayton after a fire broke out at the Omnisource Recycling Plant near Rolke Road on Tuesday evening, officials said.

The shelter-in-place began along FM-1960 near Highway 90 and extended 17 miles southward.

The Liberty County Office of Emergency Management said the order was put into effect out of an abundance of caution. It was lifted at 6 a.m. Wednesday morning.

The office also told ABC13 that air quality, which they say they've been monitoring, was OK. Officials urged residents in the impacted area to keep their doors and windows shut.

Liberty County Fire Marshal Nathan Green told local media that the fire broke out around 6:30 p.m. and contained items such as washing machines and paint cans.

At least 14 volunteer fire departments were dispatched to help contain the blaze.

While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, Green said it's possible it was caused by lithium batteries.

At this time, no injuries have been reported by officials.
