HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- A man accused of firing a weapon near apartments in northeast Houston is dead after he was shot by police, according to authorities.

The Houston Police Department said it received a call at about 7:57 a.m. Sunday, about a person firing a weapon in a backyard in the 5800 block of Hartwick.

According to police, three officers arrived at the scene, found the suspect, and attempted to give him verbal commands to drop the weapon and show his hands. At some point, police said the suspect engaged with officers, but did not elaborate how, and two officers discharged their weapons more than once.

Officers approached the suspect, attempted to do first aid, and called the Houston Fire Department, who pronounced the suspect dead.

The identity of the suspect was not immediately released, but police said it was a 29-year-old man who lives on the property.

According to HPD, investigators found evidence that the suspect discharged his weapon, but it's unclear if he fired it at officers.

Police added that the three men who were detained at the scene are witnesses, and they're trying to get statements in the case.

No officers were injured, and an investigation is ongoing.
