HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- A man has made his first court appearance after endangering a child and assaulting an officer in southwest Houston, according to the Houston Police Department.

Officials said that Rodolfo Vedey-Alvarez has been charged with evading arrest and endangering a child after an incident on the evening of June 6.

At around 8:30 p.m., a witness told HPD that a woman was walking in the road when a blue Honda Accord pulled up alongside her. Police said the witness stated that Alvarez got out of the car with a 3-year-old child and walked towards the woman in the middle of the roadway.

HPD said at one point, the witness, feeling uneasy, asked Alvarez if they could safely watch the child instead of standing in the roadway, ultimately making Alvarez flee from the area without them.

The woman's nature in the roadway at the scene has not been determined.

A short time later, HPD officers said they found the blue Honda and attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but Alvarez did not stop, leading to a chase. The pursuit was short and stopped in the 7800 block of Bellaire. The suspect did take off on foot, but was later found.

Officials said during his arrest, he reportedly got into a fight with one of the officers before being taken to jail. He has since been held without bail, according to court records.
The child's relationship or status has not been released by officials.
