HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) -- A man is accused of shooting and killing his common-law wife in their home, while their three children were also inside in east Harris County, according to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez.

Deputies said that Jose Romero, 43, was charged in the shooting death of 39-year-old Yanira Nafin.

According to HCSO, deputies responded to the shooting at a home at 1 p.m. in the 14200 block of Texarkana on Saturday. Upon arrival, deputies said EMS attempted to perform life-saving measures for Nafin, but she was later pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities said that the situation escalated when Romero reportedly became upset because Nafin wasn't taking his "back pain serious enough," the sheriff said. Additionally, deputies said that there were three children, ages 3, 8, and 13, who managed to hide when shots were fired and were unharmed.

The sheriff's office said that Romero was taken into custody and was later booked into the Harris County Jail.
