Klein ISD parents form safety coalition after 3 gun-related incidents

KLEIN, Texas (KTRK) -- A group of Klein ISD parents said they have a few safety ideas of their own following a week of gun-related incidents at the district.

Those incidents include a gun being fired inside Klein Collins High School, a man with a gun walking into Zwink Elementary, and a student showing an unloaded gun to other students at Klein High School, according to the school district.

"I had a pit in my stomach. There are so many things that run through your mind. Fear, feeling helpless, and feeling powerless," Klein ISD mom Lauren McRae said.

McRae is one of the Klein ISD parents building a new parent safety coalition. They're looking to work collaboratively with the district and bring new safety guidelines to schools.

The coalition has begun a petition, listing demands they feel would make campuses safer and make families feel more informed.

"We want to be collaborative, we want to be positive, and proactive, and to work alongside. We want as parents to have a seat at this table," McRae said.

Demands on the petition include published and measurable safety standards for each campus, real-time notification after safety incidents, and an independent third-party safety audit of Klein ISD campuses.

"I'm of the mind set be proactive instead of reactive," McRae said.

Parents interested in signing the petition and learning more about the new coalition can attend a community event being held on Tuesday at the Memorial North West Community Center in Spring at 8 pm.

No one was hurt during last week's three-gun-related incident. The district also announced heightened safety measures. Klein ISD said they will have more police, metal detectors, and K-9 patrols at all campuses.
