HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- The roadway of US-290 near West Road has reopened after an eight-vehicle car crash involving an 18-wheeler caused a giant traffic jam on Monday morning, officials said.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office said the crash happened after a car hit the front of the big rig, causing the 18-wheeler to hit the median and flip, after being hit by several other vehicles heading eastbound in the HOV lane.

The truck was carrying a heavy load of bricks that spilled across multiple lanes, causing a significant backup during the morning rush hour.

SkyEye was above the scene, where the 18-wheeler was seen over the barrier and stretched across all main lanes.

Deputies said the crash happened just before 8 a.m. and at least two women were taken to the hospital.

The sheriff's office said one woman was flown to the hospital and another was driven.

Houston TranStar reported that eight vehicles were involved in the crash, adding that the eastbound lanes were the main lanes impacted.

At about 1 p.m., three outside lanes reopened as the debris and victims began to clear. Later, around 3:30 p.m., TranStar cameras showed traffic in all lanes moving smoothly, and the crash had cleared.

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said that TXDot estimated that the cleanup on the two inside lanes and repairs to the HOV wall will be complete around 2 p.m.
