HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) -- A little league is feeling low after an alleged theft over Mother's Day weekend.
The Highlands Little League said somebody broke in and stole copper wiring from the electrical system at Kaminski Park on Sunday.
The park is located on East Canal Road near Holly Drive in The Highlands in east Harris County.
Highlands Little League President Austin Moore got the call on Mother's Day morning.
"Guy called me and said, 'Hey, we've got to cancel our night games because we got robbed.' I said, 'What do you mean we got robbed? I'll be there in five minutes.' Got here and the whole gate was flung open, the wires were everywhere," Moore said.
The electrical system was destroyed. Power was out on the fields, scoreboards, and press box.
Moore estimates that repairs will cost about $8,000.
"They probably made less than fifty bucks. Copper is going for $5.50 a pound right now, and I doubt they got ten pounds of it," Moore said.
Kaminski Park has been hit before. Surveillance video ABC13 reported on in December 2024 shows someone stealing what Moore said was about $50,000 worth of equipment.
It's a lot of money for the nonprofit that is run by volunteers.
"It's like the one thing in Highlands for the kids to do. We are all out here only for the kids, that's the only reason we're out here, and when you gotta cancel games and don't let them play, we have parents that pay registration, and then we don't get to provide that for them," Moore said.
For now, this team will play the rest of its season with temporary lights, donated by Crosby business Sunbelt Rentals.
What comes after that, the organization isn't sure, but leaders are hoping for an arrest.
"He should have been at church or at his mom's house," Moore laughed.
